01/20/09 - An Oregon Reader Is Appalled At Oregonian's Portrayal Of Portland As Too White

From: Thomas McCarthy (e-mail him)

Re: Joe Guzzardi's Column: Joe To Caroline Kennedy: Stick To the Cocktail Circuit!

Apropos Caroline Kennedy, given the utter corruption of New York politics, not least its thralldom to labor unions and Israel, I barely give a damn.

Could she possibly be worse than the squalid Chuck Schumer, Hillary Clinton or Al D'Amato?

I haven't voted since 1994 when the scales fell from my eyes after the Republican "revolutionaries," led by House Speaker Newt Gingrich, immediately after the election went into special session to give Bill Clinton his NAFTA deal.

Unless Ron Paul turns up on a local ballot, I have no plans to vote again.

I can't help smiling, however, at the parallels between New York and Illinois.

While the local Chicago media and the political hacks were doing their righteous-anger line dance over Ron Blagojevich's desire for a little of the old quid pro quo, Caroline made it known that, yes, having got bored with daily life on Park Avenue, she'd like after all to be given her family inheritance, Uncle Bobby's old seat in the Senate.

(It is precisely the same seat, by the way; that went from Bobby Kennedy to Charles Goodell to Jim Buckley to Pat Moynihan to Hillary).

"Wow, how great," said all the locals. "Think of all the fund-raising she'll do for the Democratic Party! Think of all the money!"

No one in power was shy about using virtually these very words.

A local news station radio NY1, whose function is to telecast the Establishment's hard-left credo on a 24-hour-a-day basis (i.e., more immigration, more ethnic and sexual diversity, more taxes, more unions, and more weapons for Israel) has broadcast countless discussions and colloquia wherein politicians and media courtiers from the Daily News, the New York Post, and the New York Times drool over Caroline qua cash cow.

Yet no one sees any similarity between New York and Illinois politics.

Truly, irony is dead.

By the way, I can't help believing that Blago is set to take a fall to make sure that nothing tarnishes Israeli war hero Rahm Emanuel and his boss, our New Messiah Barack Obama.

McCarthy is recently retired from his senior editor position at a publishing house respected for its scholastic reference materials. Encyclopedias edited by McCarthy have earned critical acclaim and won industry awards. His previous letters about foreign-born labor on Cape Cod and Victor Davis Hanson are here and here
