From the LA Times:

In Massachusetts primary stunner, Ayanna Pressley unseats Rep. Michael Capuano

In a political stunner, Democratic U.S. Rep. Michael E. Capuano conceded defeat in Tuesday’s primary to Ayanna Pressley, a Boston city councilor who is virtually assured of becoming the first black woman to serve Massachusetts in Congress. …

With 99% of the vote counted, the challenger is up 59-41, so it’s not even close.

Capuano is considered one of the most liberal members of the Massachusetts delegation, and Pressley had acknowledged she had few major policy quarrels with him.

So this is different from Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s famous primary win, where there were ideological differences as well as identity differences.

Capuano, age 66, is a ten term Congressman. Capuano had a pretty good leftist anti-war record, voting against the Iraq Attaq in 2002 and wanting to get out of Afghanistan today. Pressley, 44, is a member of the Boston city council, and has a negligible foreign policy record.

There’s no GOP candidate running in the fall, so Pressley is in.

Massachusetts’ 7th District has this ethnicity:

33.69% White
26.46% Black
10.71% Asian
21.55% Hispanic
0.39% Native American
7.20% other
