06/01/09 - A Washington State Readers Catches The New York Times Slurring Americans

From: Tom Sturdivant (e-mail him)

Re: Today's Letter: A Vermont Democrat Predicts Her Party's Moderates May Block Sonia Sotomayor's Supreme Court Nomination

Regarding Elizabeth Harris' letter, in 1991, then-powerful New York Senator Patrick Moynihan forced President George H.W. Bush, in a back room deal, to appoint Sonia Sotomayor to the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York.

But Bush Sr. likely regrets her choice, just like he later regretted nominating Justice David Souter.

Then in 1998, Sotomayor was narrowly confirmed (68-28) to the 2nd Circuit Court under Bill Clinton. However, seven current Senate Republicans, sensing she might be fast-tracked to the Supreme Court, held up her confirmation for over a year.

They are: Susan Collins (R-ME), Olympia Snowe (R-ME), Thad Cochran (R-MI), Richard Lugar (R-IN), Orrin Hatch (R-UT), Robert Bennett (R-UT) and Judd Gregg (R-NH)

A coalition of the dozen Democrats listed by Harris, the seven Republicans I mention above as well as other conservative opposition party Republicans would be enough to kill Sotomayor's nomination.

Other Sturdivant letters about New York Sen. Chuck Schumer's close ties to bankrupt Wall Street, the useless Caroline Kennedy and Obama's fading popularity are here, here and here.
