Needless to say, neither writer Annie Lowrey (email her) nor the huge comment thread on her November 16 New York Times article Caught in a Revolving Door of Unemployment pick up on this point, but unemployed former MIT administrator Jenner Barrington-Ward, an African American, specifically says:There Should Be A Law: Unemployed MIT Administrator Denied Job Scrubbing Toilets Because She Doesnt Speak Spanish

I got denied a job scrubbing toilets because I didn’t speak Spanish

Why should native-born Americans be discriminated against in this way? A simple fix would be to ban discrimination based on language facility other than English—exactly as was done in Quebec for French.
