Professor Stephen Toope said the coronavirus pandemic had forced Cambridge to rethink the way it assessed its students

The three-hour finals that struck fear into the hearts of generations of Cambridge students are being dropped in some subjects, the university’s vice-chancellor says.

The changes are expected to cut the gap in the number of first-class degrees achieved by women, ethnic-minority students and the disabled compared with others, and to reduce anxiety.
