Early on Friday morning Haaretz reported a scoop: Israel secretly bans citizens of Ebola-stricken West Africa from visiting country by Barak Ravid Nov 7 2014.

The Haaretz story (which is behind a pay wall) amplifies

A source in the Foreign Ministry said that the classified telegram was sent by the head of the consular department, Igal Sarfaty, who instructed the missions not to issue visas to citizens of Sierra Leone, Liberia and Guinea.

The instructions also said to avoid giving visas to foreign nationals who recently visited these three countries… Serfaty wrote in the telegram that the instructions ought to be kept secret and not publicized.

Haaretz harrumphed

The instructions to ban citizens from Sierra Leone, Liberia and Guinea from entering Israel are extremely irregular. Most Western governments, and among them the U.S., have so far avoided taking such a step. Canada and Australia, however, did issue a visa ban.

This action will be effective for a reason highly relevant to America: the Israeli border fence in Sinai has stopped illegal immigrants crossing by land as I most recently discussed in A Tale Of Two Fences: American And Israeli Border Policies

Another entity which apparently does not care about fellow Americans is the Anti-Defamation League which last month trumpeted Anti-Immigrant Groups Call For Immigration Bans Following Ebola Scare

Anti-immigrant extrem­ists also used the Ebola news as an oppor­tu­nity to call for a reduc­tion to immi­gra­tion. For some reason the ADL has not commented on the Israeli travel ban.
