Hewlett-Packard Job Ads—They're Advertising For The Same People They Just Laid Off (Or Almost The Same)

Historian, blogger, and software engineer Clayton Cramer just got laid off from his software engineer job at Hewlett-Packard in Boise. Thus, he was surprised to see that Hewlett-Packard seems to be advertising, on of the Idaho Department of Labor website, for people just like those they laid off. He writes
Multiple positions—and so generic that it would fit most of the software engineers that HP just laid off. So I decided to apply. It turns out that you have to login to the Idaho Dept. of Labor website and apply before you see who the employer is.

Job ref: BOISHI. Please mail resumes with reference number to Hewlett-Packard Company Attn: P. Ramirez, 19483 Pruneridge Avenue, MS 4206, Cupertino, CA 95014.The reference number is ID1323905. The email address is [email protected]. Well, that's curious. They are looking to hire people with experience quite similar to those that they have just laid off. What's with that? Especially because I can't find the position listed on the internal job list. Anyway, I went ahead and applied, and I would encourage any of you software engineers with the right experience, and who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents, to do likewise. I would be very curious to know if there were some other job requirements that didn't make it into the ad.

I have a suspicion, and I think Cramer shares it, that HP is looking to hire cheaper foreigners to replace expensive Americans, and trying to do it legally.  See Rob Sanchez's analysis here: More Phony Job Ads—This Time From Hewlett Packard.

This also involved sending resumes to 19483 Pruneridge Ave., MS 4206, Cupertino, CA 95014, and Rob Sanchez said

Susan Lampedecchio’s name appears once again, along with a mailing address of MS 4206. Remember that address? That’s the address in Item #1 where the resumes are being mailed to. So, resumes that are mailed to MS4206 are first reviewed by an immigration specialist instead of an HR person or a hiring manager. Lampedecchio’s job is probably to find reasons to reject resumes from qualified Americans.
