Re: Joe Guzzardi's Column: Joe's Immigration Reform Fantasy Comes True—Almost!
In one of his responses to Jorge Castañeda, who was misrepresenting Mexico's immigration policy to Miami Herald reporter Casey Woods, Guzzardi wrote:
"In Guatemala, it's common knowledge that if migrants get caught crossing into Mexico, they'll be beaten, raped and robbed before being kicked back."
A report from Mexico dated March 4th confirms what Guzzardi said.
I have translated the appropriate excerpt:
"In the southern border of our country, 7 of each ten migrant youth women originating from El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua, they are attacked in their human rights by officials of customs, agents of the Preventive Federal Police (PFP), state and federal courts, municipal police officers and elements of the armed forces." [The entire news story is here; Spanish only]
Martinez, a first generation Hispanic, is a U.S. citizen and writes that he is "very much against illegal immigration."
