I am an anti-murder journalist-activist.

I tweet out, among much else, data-driven analyses of the causes of the record 31% increase in gun murders in 2020 over 2019.

You have chosen to suspend my account for 12 hours on the grounds that these tweets are “hateful” and “promote violence,” when in obvious reality that are “data-filled” and are intended to educate the public about the causes of the enormous increase in murders in the US over the last 9 months so America can have a social science-informed conversation about how to lower the murder rate.

Please re-establish my Twitter account and issue a public apology to me for your pro-violence censorship.

In the tweets above, I link to Brooklyn College professor Robert Cherry’s January 13 article in National Review. Like me a week earlier, Prof. Cherry appears to have made up his own spreadsheet comparing 2020 murders to 2019 murders:

In 2020, homicides increased by 35 percent from 2019 across the 50 largest urban areas, reaching levels in many cities not seen for more than 20 years. Some in the media suggest the spike is simply another downside of the pandemic. But this would appear to gloss over the likely link to unintended consequences of the nationwide demonstrations after George Floyd’s death in the custody of Minneapolis police.

Similarly, my reference to there only being 14 unarmed blacks who were shot dead by police in 2020 comes from the Washington Post’s database of police killings, a trivial number compared to the 3,668 fatality increase in 2020 over 2019 in gun murders according to data in the Gun Violence Archive.

And, I point out, not all the “unarmed” black victims were actually unarmed: Michael Brown of Ferguson tried to wrestle the gun from the policeman in his cruiser, causing a shot to be fired inside the police car, jogger-prowler Ahmaud Arbery charged the man attempting a citizen’s arrest and had his hand on the barrel of the shotgun when shot, and Rayshard Brooks in Atlanta stole a policeman’s tazer and shot it at him.

But, being against murder in 2021 brings censorship.
