South African Farm Attacks In October: Fatally Shot, Stabbed, Bound, Beaten... But Some Fought Back, And Won

Some of the farm attacks that occurred in South African in October. Despite South Africa’s black rule, white farmers are still armed, and allowed to fight back... for now.

  • An elderly couple in Hendrina, Mpumalanga province of South Africa were confronted by an armed intruder as they returned to their farm home from an outing.

The 70-year-old victim managed to shoot the intruder, who was armed with a knife.

The couple were treated for shock at a hospital after the incident.

  • A farmer was fatally shot during a home invasion in Roedtan, Limpopo province.

36-year-old Janse van Rensburg was identified as the victim.

Five assailants assaulted and bound a young man, then waited for the farmer and his girlfriend to return home. After his arrival he was shot and his girlfriend assaulted and bound.

The scene was discovered when a farm employee arrived the next morning. Theft was the apparent motive. Three arrests were made.

  • A farm attack was foiled in Reitz, Free State province.

Acting on a tip, police stopped a vehicle containing five occupants and burglar tools.

  • Retired siblings were hospitalized after being assaulted during a farm attack in Laersdrif, Limpopo province.

80-year-old Sannie Luus was assaulted with a panga—South African for machete—and her brother, 66-year-old Gert Joubert, was reportedly beaten and stabbed in the neck. Joubert later died from his injuries.

Stolen were R500, a TV set, cell phones, other items, and Mrs. Luus’ gray Opel Corsa.

  • A victim was assaulted with hammer after three attackers smashed through a farm home door in Muldersdrift, Gauteng province.

Reports say one of the home invaders attempted to shoot their victim, but his gun jammed. The assailants fled with stolen property.

  • In spite of gunfire, a farmer managed to fight off home invaders in Lammermoor, Gauteng province.

A farmer managed to lock himself in a room after suffering a head wound while fighting two of three home invaders. The assailants made off with a television and an iMac.

The victim required staples to close a wound atop his head.

  • An assailant used an AK47 while robbing a woman at her farm in Modjadjiskloof, Limpopo province.

An arrest was made and police confiscated the AK47 and recovered the victim’s vehicle that had been stolen.

  • Two of four alleged assailants were apprehended after a farm couple were bound and robbed in Barberton, Mpumalanga province.

The four attackers were armed with a panga and knife.

Some items stolen from the property were recovered, including a .357 revolver.

Police continue to search for two other alleged attackers and more stolen items.

  • A farmer and his family were assaulted and robbed near Thornville, KwaZulu-Natal province.

A private security company tracked down seven individuals believed to be tied to the incident.

Recovered were 3 rifles, a chainsaw, clothing, liquor purchased with the stolen bank card, a rifle safe, cellphones, and a Volkswagen Jetta used by suspects.

  • A farmer was robbed while watching television at his farm home in Badfontein, Mpumalanga province.

Having broken through a sliding door, the intruders held their victim with a gun pressed against his head. He was assaulted and bound with wire.

The three assailants ransacked the home, making off with a gun, jewelry, and household items.
