There were 12 farm attacks in southern Africa, including one homicide, according to southafricatoday.net.

  • Hugo Van Sittert, a 71-year-old farmer residing alone on his farm Bok se Puts, situated between Keimoes and Kakamas in the Northern Cape, was discovered murdered on Thursday, February 8, 2024.

 He had been bludgeoned to death with a blunt object. Van Sittert was assaulted on his farm four days earlier.

His body was found on the neighboring farm Bok se Dam, approximately 150 meters (450 ft) from the entrance gate. Theo de Jager, the chairman of the Southern Africa Agri-Initiative (Saai), remarked, ”It appears he may have still been alive and attempting to crawl.”

Keimoes police swiftly apprehended a suspect who was spotted driving Hugo’s truck. Subsequently, the suspect led authorities to a residence where they confiscated a firearm. The individual was taken into custody on charges of illegal firearm possession. Another individual found in the vehicle was also arrested, suspected of possessing a potentially stolen vehicle.

According to reports, the primary suspect was believed to have been an employee of Hugo’s. He, accompanied by a friend, visited Hugo’s residence on Sunday to demand payment of his wages. Allegedly, the suspect claimed that the victim fired shots at them with a .22 rifle, resulting in one of the suspects sustaining a hand injury. Following his apprehension, the suspect provided authorities with information leading to the potential location of Van Sittert’s body.

  • An individual was reportedly shot while in a vehicle on a farm in East London, Eastern Cape province, on February 2, 2024.
  • In Rustenburg, North West province, a man was assaulted with a brick and bound. Thieves made off with a cell phone, wallet, and television. The incident occurred on February 3, 2024.
  • A farmer was shot in the chest in Boekenhoutkloof, Gauteng province. That incident occurred on February 7, 2024.
  • Two farm residents were bound in Windhoek, Namibia. A Volkswagen van was stolen. The attack occurred on February 8, 2024.
  • Alet Potgieter was assaulted at a farm in Wasbank, KwaZulu-Natal province. The February 11 attack netted five firearms and cash for four assailants.
  • 66-year-old Johan le Roux was shot in the chest, arm, and leg on February 11, 2024. An unknown number of assailants stole firearms, a laptop computer, and a vehicle. It occurred in Nelspruit (officially Mbombela), Mpumalanga province.
  • Tanay Bornman, 54, was shot in the leg during a theft encounter in Cullinana, Gauteng province, on February 12, 2024. Stolen were a cell phone, bakkie (small vehicle), and an all-terrain vehicle (ATV). An 83-year-old female companion was present during the attack.
  • Fifty “Economic Freedom Fighters”  (EFF) members reportedly assaulted a farm worker in Ottosdal, North West province, on February 15, 2024.

  • A farm worker was bound and assaulted in Sundra, Gauteng province, on February 19, 2024. Firearms and household items were taken. In addition, a cat and dog were reported poisoned.
  • A farmer in East London/Kamga, Eastern Coast province, was assaulted, bound, threatened, and burned with hot water. Two vehicles and a safe were stolen. The incident occurred on February 20, 2024.
  • Herman Lemmer managed to fend off a farm attack in Hartesbeespoortdam, North West province. The attack occurred on February 27, 2024.
