White South African farmers were attacked, beaten, murdered (3 died) and tortured with whips and hot irons. One woman in Sasolburg, whose husband was in the process of being beaten to death, was able to seize the club from the attacker's hand and kill him. Police are investigating her.

  • A couple identified as Rudolf and Grace were the victims of a farm attack in the South African town of Rustenburg, North West province.

Reports say the couple were assaulted and bound by four attackers who used pangas (a South African machete) as their weapons. Not only did the thieves make off with firearms and the couple’s small truck, but they also stole a refrigerator and generator.

The attack occurred August 31, 2021.

  • A 53-year-old man was shot in the back during a farm attack in Port Elizabeth, Eastern Cape province.

The victim’s girlfriend managed to escape to contact neighbors but was followed by the attackers, who demanded money and firearms from her. Upon returning to her home, she found her friend suffering from a gunshot wound.

The attackers made off with a cell phone, television, and a small amount of cash. No arrests have been made.

The attack occurred August 31, 2021.

  • Werner Buchner, 55, was fatally shot during a farm attack in Nanaga, in the Eastern Cape province.

His son, Werner Buchner, Jr., was also shot but survived and the elder Buchner’s wife, Estelle, was severely beaten when she tried to intervene. She suffered two broken arms.

Taken in the attack were a cell phone and a small amount of cash. No arrests were reported.

The attack occurred September 5, 2021.

[Farm murder: Farmer shot dead, son wounded, wife seriously injured, Nanaga, attributed to Oorgrens Veiligheid, southafricatoday.com, September 6, 2021]

  • Chris Barnard and his wife Hesta were beaten and tortured during a four-hour ordeal in their home during a farm attack near Derby in the North West province.

Reports say Chris was beaten with a whip and lug wrench. His wife burned with a hot iron and had a portion of her hair cut off with a knife.

The attackers ransacked the couple’s home, making off with household items, electrical equipment, and a small truck.

The attack occurred September 8, 2021.

  • Four assailants armed with a firearm and panga assaulted a 25-year-old man in Kroondal in the North West Province.

The attackers demanded firearms and cash. The victim managed to free himself and escape when the attackers turned their attention to a bar located on the property. A few undisclosed items were taken. No arrests were reported.

The incident occurred September 7, 2021.

  • Eleven people were bound and assaulted at a guest farm near Hermanus in the Western Cape province.

Victims included a baby and small boy. Victims were forced to stand in a line and made to believe they were to be executed. One of the men was forced into a bedroom where he was strangled with a rope. He survived.

Reports say the three attackers wore balaclavas and were armed with a gun, crowbar, and screwdriver. The assailants made off with cell phones, jewelry, other valuables, and cash.

The victims were rescued by local security companies. Police made no arrests.

  • A 48-year-old woman was assaulted after pressing an alarm button shortly after three intruders entered her home.

The attack occurred at a farm in Port Elizabeth (now officially called Gqeberha), in the Eastern Cape province. Reports say the woman was watching television with her boyfriend and mother when the home invasion occurred. The home was ransacked with the suspects taking cash, jewelry, cellphones, laptop and a camera.

A police K9 unit responded to the alarm. Two cell phones were recovered in nearby bushes. The suspects remained at large.

  • An elderly farm couple were caught off guard as they were ambushed upon returning to their farm home in Westonaria in Gauteng province.

Reports say Jan Stolz and his wife, ages 71 and 66 respectively, were assaulted and bound by the intruders. The woman was stabbed and her husband struck on the head with a hammer.

The four balaclava-wearing attackers entered the secured home through the roof. After ransacking the home, the assailants made off with 19 firearms, a small truck, and other items. The victims were not seriously injured. It was their second home invasion.

The bound victims were later discovered when their two children arrived at the home.

Reports say the firearms and truck were recovered along with other stolen items. Two arrests were made with more arrests expected as an investigation proceeds.

The incident occurred September 16, 2021.

  • Duan Slingerland, a 19-year-old farm manager, was attacked by four intruders at a farm in Modimolle (Nylstroom), in Limpopo province.

Reports say one of the intruders pointed a gun at Slingerland, holding it between the victim’s eyes, then pulled the trigger. After the gun failed to fire, the intruders beat their victim before throwing him through a glass window. He suffered severe lacerations and profuse bleeding.

Stolen were a cell phone, wallet, televisions, oven, generator, and rifle. A small pickup truck was also taken.

Later reports reveal one of the suspects was arrested in court where he was appearing for another charge. Apparently, the 32-year-old suspect arrived at court driving the same vehicle used in the farm attack. Some of the stolen property was recovered after the arrest.

The incident occurred September 18, 2021. The arrest was made September 28, 2021.

  • A 70-year-old woman was attacked on a farm in Kareedouw, in the Eastern Cape province.

The victim was approached while tending a garden. She was bound and forced into her house where assailants stole a laptop, cellphone, tablet, cash and jewelry.

Authorities were notified after the victim managed to free herself. A 48-year-old male was arrested and many of the stolen items were recovered.

  • Levyno Botha, age 70, was fatally shot in the back during a farm invasion near Pretoria, in the Gauteng province.

Reports say five armed invaders broke through the home’s barred windows to gain access in the early morning hours. Upon hearing the attackers struggle with her husband in another room, Botha’s 64-year-old wife, Amelia, called out to the couple’s son. The intruders, who were ransacking the home, fled with a stolen phone and wallet. One of the assailants fired a shot into the house striking the victim. The invaders had previously fired a shot while they were inside the home.

The incident occurred September 25, 2021 at 1 a.m.

  • A farmer and his wife took refuge in their farmhouse bedroom after the woman was confronted by an armed intruder outside their home.

At least one of the attackers fired several rounds through the bedroom door, but none of the bullets struck the victims.

No arrests were made. The attack occurred September 24, 2021 near Hammanskraal in the Limpopo province

  • A home invader was killed by a farmer’s wife in the Sasolburg area of the Free State province.

Reports say the woman was alerted by barking dogs and, upon investigation, found her husband being beaten by a club called a knobkerrie. When the club slipped from the attacker’s hand, the woman grabbed it and used it against the assailant, killing him in the process.

A knobkerrie, sometimes spelled knobkerry, is a club with a knobbed end used by hunters in South Africa to kill prey by beating them in the head, and frequently used as a weapon by blacks.

A farm attack took place on Monday 27 September 2021, at 18:30, on the farm Weltevreden, in the Sasolburg area of the Free State province province of South Africa. A farmer and his wife arrived home to find one of their dogs dead and another in his cage.

The wife went to investigate what had happened to the dogs when she heard her husband call out.

Suddenly the farmer was attacked by an assailant with a knobkerrie.

The attacker was beating the farmer relentlessly when the knobkerrie slipped from his hands.

In defense of her husband the wife retrieved the knobkerrie and laid into the attacker killing him in the process.

The farmer had to be evacuated to hospital for medical attention.

Police are investigating the attack and murder.

  • 50-year-old Petrus Steyn was murdered on his farm in the Heilbron area in the Free State province.

The victim was apparently beaten to death when ambushed by three attackers as he walked between his farmhouse and store room. Reports say the victim’s safe was found open and an unknown number of firearms missing. No arrests were reported.

The incident occurred September 30, 2021.
