Hopefully, America is full of obscure but hugely competent experts on epidemiology and management who will come to the forefront in the coming weeks. But I can’t think of any celebrity epidemiologists.

So, if I try to think of the American who has the highest combination of:

• Name recognition
• Proven organization track record
• Knowledge of epidemiology

I come up with Bill Gates.
