Republicans have been (very) slowly catching on that Democrats benefit in the long run electorally from mass immigration. In turn, Democrats are shocked, shocked to be hit with the infinitely racist accusation that they have self-interested reasons for backing immigration. Who ever heard of such a thing?

From Aaron Sorkin’s The West Wing in the fourth episode of season 3 in 2001, “Ways and Means”:

SAM [Presidential aide played by Rob Lowe]
What else?

CAMPOS [A Hispanic leader from California]
Complete amnesty…

SAM
[shaking his head] No way.

CAMPOS
Complete amnesty…

SAM
Victor…

CAMPOS
[pointing his finger, raising his voice] Complete amnesty for all undocumented immigrants from the Americas. Mexico, Chile, El Salvador…

CONNIE [Another Presidential aide, played by Connie Britton]
It’ll also expand the Democratic Party. Millions of illegal immigrants could come out of hiding. That’s millions of potential voters who are going to vote for you. Three million voters in California that’s 13% of the vote. 19% in Arizona. You know as well as I do the Republican Party is gonna try to outflank us on this. You know it’s the right thing to take to the President, so why are you giving him a hard time? …

SAM
If I take this to the President, what do we get?

CAMPOS
California and its 435 delegates.

SAM
I shouldn’t have blown up at you before.

CAMPOS
Nobody’ll know.

SAM
Yeah?

Campos nods and walks away with a half a smile.

CAMPOS
Loyalty.

Of course, the process of illegal aliens becoming voters is not fast nor sure.

And amnesty acts as a magnet for the next wave of illegal aliens, whose kids will be born eligible to vote.
