Bad things are happening in the Arizona desert just south of Phoenix. This is a quick update. A deputy was shot about 50 miles south of Phoenix by a drug smuggler with an AK-47. He was rescued military style by helicopter. At least one helicopter took took gun fire. As of May 1 there is still a huge manhunt to find the illegal aliens involved.

A Pinal County sheriff's deputy was shot and wounded Friday after encountering a group of suspected illegal immigrants who apparently had been hauling bales of marijuana along a major smuggling corridor.

After a frantic, hour-long desert search, authorities found Deputy Louie Puroll, 53, wounded in the Arizona desert near Interstate 8.

TV 12: 17 detained after search for smugglers who shot Sheriff's deputy

Seventeen people were detained overnight in the search for suspects in FridayÂ?s shooting of Pinal County SheriffÂ?s Deputy Louis Puroll by suspected drug smugglers in an isolated area of south-central Arizona.

Pinal County Lt. Tami Villar says 14 of those detained are suspected of being illegal immigrants, while three match the description of the shooters given by Puroll.
