JOHN DERBYSHIRE: Progressives Find New Pets. Former Pets—Black Americans—Object

[Adapted from the latest Radio Derb, now available exclusively on VDARE.com]

New York City Progressives have got new pets. Progressives derive their spiritual nourishment from there being some population of poor people on whose behalf they can pose as humanitarians.

Back in the days when Marxism was taken seriously, the domestic working class filled that role. The working class, however, turned out to be a disappointment. They didn’t want revolution and they didn’t much mind capitalists getting super-wealthy so long as they, the working class, could live in a stable society under rule of law, with the opportunity to attain modest prosperity doing useful work, with decent provision of education and healthcare.

The disappointed Progressives turned to blacks as a group they could patronize. That didn’t work too well, either. Instead of being grateful to the patronizing Lefties, blacks felt, well, patronized and resentful.

And it turned out a lot of them didn’t like whites very much, or the nation they found themselves living in. As one of them told his followers: ”God damn America!”

What should Progressives do to be saved? What race or group can now serve as a backdrop for their humanitarian posturing?

The Biden administration, which is Blue State Progressivism enthroned, has given us a clear answer. Illegal aliens are the new proletariat, the new Negroes.

Progressives can’t get enough of them; they can’t do enough for them. This is exceptionally clear in today’s New York City.

Here’s a guy with a beef. The guy’s name is Daniel Barber, a black American, pictured below.

Mr. Barber is an advocate for New York City’s public housing tenants, of whom there are a third of a million.

That twangs my heartstrings some. I spent most of my younger years,

Racial differences in sports performance are often ascribed to culture—e.g., there aren’t that many black America’s Cup yachtsmen for obvious reasons—but there are some striking ones within sports, such as which positions different races tend to play in baseball. “Don’t make the black kids angry.” Aside from being good advice generally, these words were the title of a book by the late Colin Flaherty, a man who grasped why racial integration, whether forced or “encouraged,” results in something less than peace, love and understanding. Sporting events are a case in point. As America descends further into anti-whiteness, it is worth remembering how a long-forgotten riot at a football game in the nation’s capital 60 years ago got us to where we are.

More than 50,000 fans filled the stands of District of Columbia (now Robert F. Kennedy) Stadium on November 22, 1962 for the annual Thanksgiving battle for local high school football supremacy. One school was public and all-black (it had been a white school before desegregation in 1955); the other was Catholic and almost all-white. A lot more was on the line than bragging rights. Knowing what we know now, the black-on-white mass attack that began near the end of the game, and continued for hours, seemed almost fated to happen.

To make a long story short, the white team won. That’s why the riot happened. But I digress.

In the early Sixties, black Civil Rights activists, led by Martin Luther King Jr., took their nationwide crusade to a new level. That John F. Kennedy rather than Richard Nixon, was president mattered little. The drive for legal and social equality was making its mark locally as well. Segregated for decades, Washington, D.C. neighborhoods were becoming integrated. An ongoing metro area housing boom was one reason. A more far-reaching one was the effects of two Supreme Court rulings: 1) Shelley v. Kraemer (1948), which declared race-restricted private covenants in real estate transactions to be unenforceable; and 2) Brown v. Board of Education (1954), which invalidated the longstanding “separate but equal” doctrine for use of public facilities.

Was the city better off? Washington native son Pat Buchanan, in his 1988 autobiography, Right from the Beginning, suggested it was not:

In the 1950s, there were no food stamps or Medicaid payments or rent supplements. The relief agencies were the churches. But no one starved; no “homeless” froze to death; no shake-down artist extorted millions out of the White House by threatening to starve himself to death; and everyone worked. Black teenage unemployment was 9 percent in 1948. Today, it runs between 35 and 50 percent.

Numbers mattered. Blacks were only 28.2 percent of the District of Columbia population in 1940, but comprised 35.0 percent in 1950, 53.9 percent in 1960, and 71.1 percent in 1970. To say this long-term shift had implications for public safety would be an understatement. Black enrollment in public schools rose accordingly. As for whites, many were Catholic—like Pat Buchanan, Gonzaga Class of 1956—and attended the city’s Catholic schools.

The tradition of the Thanksgiving city title game began in 1955, the year after Brown v. Board of Education. This was no coincidence. Public and parochial school

The Thanksgiving Season is upon us, giving us a chance to be thankful for family, friends and country. Not everyone feels that way, though. Since Thanksgiving is a great tradition of the Historic American Nation, some people use the festive season to bash America and Americans—especially white Americans.

This is from a Social Justice type who works for Lifehacker.com.

9 Lies You Were Told About the First Thanksgiving

The kid-friendly story is too low on genocide, and the hats are all wrong.

By Beth Skwarecki, LifeHacker.com, November 21, 2022

The basic idea is that the Pilgrims who settled New England were the villains, and what Thomas Jefferson called (rightly) the “merciless Indian savages whose known rule of warfare, is an undistinguished destruction of all ages, sexes, and conditions” were the Good Guys.

Ms. Skwarecki also thinks that the Indians were victims of “genocide.” But there are actually more Indians alive today than there were then, and at no time did white Americans attempt to exterminate the Indians.

It’s true that the Indians were victims of “genocide” in that they were Greatly Replaced, but I’m told that “Great Replacementdoesn’t count as genocide—and is in fact, a “conspiracy theory.”

Briefly, and I do want to be brief, there is a War on Thanksgiving in the same way that there is a War on Christmas. In addition, there is a phenomenon we call War on Thanksgiving Denial, same as with Christmas.

If you find it difficult to believe that there’s a War on Thanksgiving, you’re in agreement with Salon.com’s Amanda Marcotte, who wrote in 2019: Donald Trump’s new lie is a real turkey: Now liberals are waging war on Thanksgiving!  Not content with the mythical ”war on Christmas,” Trump now claims that liberals want to cancel Thanksgiving, November 27, 2019.

Salon.com, which denies the War on Thanksgiving, has also at various times published the following articles:

See what I mean?

For more than 50 years, our country has been engaged in systemic discrimination against the nation’s most despised racial group, whites. Recently, the Supreme Court heard cases challenging legal race discrimination in a pair of lawsuits brought against Harvard and the University of North Carolina for their “affirmative action” policies.

Despite the oft-repeated claim that affirmative action “hurts black people the most,” for the past half-century, it’s whites who’ve been bringing lawsuit after lawsuit for being rejected—solely because of their race—from universities (not to mention jobs, promotions, government contracts, scholarships, executive suites, homecoming queens, etc.).

In response, the Supreme Court announced this fundamental principle of constitutional law: Could you guys try hiding what you’re doing a little better?

That’s why the current cases have the legal world abuzz. Could this finally be the end of rank prejudice masquerading as virtue? This time, you see, the plaintiffs are Asian.

The switch from white to Asian has important legal implications. To be sure, with their high SAT scores and low crime rates, Asians are “white adjacent” and therefore also kinda hated. But at least they’re not white.

Thus, the attorney challenging Harvard’s race discrimination couldn’t say enough good things about “diversity”! The petitioners, you see, have another, better plan that will admit a boatload of Asians while preserving “diversity’s” life-giving force. Indeed, the lawyer boasted that the Asians’ plan would also “lower the number of white students on campus.”

This wasn’t a passing aside. Oh no, it was the heart and soul of his argument. E.g.:

  • “[Under our plan] the number of white students

Earlier, by Peter Brimelow, 2015: GOP Should "Thank Heaven Fasting" For Trump But Instead Plans To Shoot Self In Testicles

The GOP Establishment has fingered a culprit for the disappointing midterm results: Donald Trump. GOP leaders and Conservatism Inc. pundits claim the American people want something different. They insist Trump’s candidates were sure losers and the party should no longer support such politicians. Many think this argument is just about Trump the man, but it’s not. The GOP Ruling Class wants to rid the party of Trumpism and resurrect its Business First program. Instead of Trumpism without Trump, the elites want a GOP without Trumpism.

The Wall Street Journal made this clear in an editorial the day after the election. The newspaper didn’t just blame Trump—it blamed the candidates he backed. “What will Democrats do when Donald Trump isn’t around to lose elections?” the editorial board asked:

We have to wonder because on Tuesday Democrats succeeded again in making the former President a central campaign issue, and Mr. Trump helped them do it.

Trumpy Republican candidates failed at the ballot box in states that were clearly winnable. This can’t be what Mr. Trump was envisioning ahead of his “very big announcement” next week. Yet maybe the defeats are what the party needs to hear before 2024.

Looking at the Senate map, the message could not be clearer. In New Hampshire, the Trump-endorsed Republican Don Bolduc lost to Sen. Maggie Hassan, 53% to 45%, as of the latest data. At the same time voters re-elected Republican Gov. Chris Sununu by 16 points.

[Trump Is the Republican Party’s Biggest Loser, November 9, 2022]

The WSJ editorial called Bolduc “kooky,” then castigated Trump for his supposedly terrible endorsements. But these included moderate Mehmet Oz and the former football player Herschel Walker, although in fact neither of them ran on Trumpism. And the WSJ attacked even those Trump endorsements who did run on Trumpism and won. Blake Masters was a terrible candidate, the editorial claimed, and the party should’ve run moderate governor Doug Ducey instead. Granted, J.D. Vance won, the editorial board opined, but his margin of victory was too low. The WSJ also attacked Joe Kent and John Gibbs; the Never Trumpers they beat in the primaries should’ve been the nominees.

Not coincidentally, the WSJ’s preferred alternatives to Trump’s candidates were generally terrible on the critical issue of immigration. Michigan Rep. Peter Meijer, whom Gibbs defeated, championed Amnesty for illegal-alien farm workers. He also voted for Trump’s impeachment. Washington Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler, whom Kent defeated, was another Amnesty supporter who voted for Trump’s impeachment. Masters bested businessman Jim Lamon in the primaries. Lamon talked tough on illegal immigration, but declared America has “the most beautiful, ample legal immigration system on the planet.”

In contrast, all four of the Trumpist candidates whom the WSJ editorial attacked campaigned on restricting legal immigration. The WSJ Edit Page
