Lana Del Rey: Too Good Or Too White?

This July Fourth, it’s worth remembering the National Anthem music video that the immensely popular and gifted singer-songwriter Lana Del Rey released ten years ago. It was one of those gloating pro-miscegenation pieces that we’re bombarded with nowadays, with Del Rey and black rapper A$AP Rocky portraying Jackie and John F. Kennedy (with visibly mulatto children), and hardly patriotic. But the point is that the video has done Del Rey absolutely no good at all—she’s still a racist. Actually, she isn’t a racist. But since the Left is now insisting that she is…well, she is. And she doesn’t seem to know what has hit her.

Thus a Twitter user vented over her recent album, Chemtrails over the Country Club:

Lana Del Rey really just released an album and then was a racist in the post trying to say she wasn’t a racist. Just say you didn’t want your album to succeed girl.

And there’s lot more where that came from.

Welcome to race and gender Cancel Culture, Lana. Its enforcers are determined to make you grovel until you accept their terms. And they won’t be swayed by your denials or your professed love of rap.

At an accelerating rate, Woke social media mobs are demanding that leading white figures in the performing arts publicly atone for harming women, blacks, transgendered and other “marginalized” populations. Recently, I described the global “anti-racist” campaign against Eric Clapton for blunt comments he delivered onstage way back in 1976 on behalf of English immigration patriot Enoch Powell. Triggering that witch-hunt was a song Clapton and Van Morrison wrote, recorded and released in late 2020, “Stand and Deliver,” challenging the morality of COVID-19 lockdowns. To Clapton’s inquisitors, limiting immigration and resisting lockdowns are cut from the same Trumpian cloth.

Lana Del Rey, whose real name is Elizabeth Grant, hasn’t accumulated such baggage in nearly 15 years as a recording artist. But the petty and spiteful campaign against her, while unable to cancel her outright, could now erode her artistic identity. Her “crimes” aren’t about what she has done. They are about what she symbolizes: femininity, beauty, white privilege.

Grant was born in 1985 in New York City. of Scottish-American descent. She grew up in Lake Placid, New York. An introvert, she experienced existential dread early on:

“When I was very young, I was sort of floored by the fact that my mother and my father and everyone else I knew was going to die one day, and myself too,” she recalled. “I had a sort of philosophical crisis. I couldn’t believe that we were mortal.”

In 1995, VDARE.com Editor Peter Brimelow wrote about America becoming an Alien Nation as a result of (legal) mass immigration.  Ten years ago in America, Anti-America, And The Role Of VDARE.com, he said:

This new Anti-America is unmistakably and irrevocably a nation of the Left—of government intervention, taxes, income redistribution programs, racial quotas, speech codes, Christophobia, Cultural Marxist Political Correctness etc.

There are several reasons for this political predilection. They include:

  • Reflexive alienation from historic America and against the limited-government tradition that is the Historic America Nation’s political distinguishing tradition.
  • So many post-1964 immigrants come from countries with no strong tradition of liberty or the rule of law. One of the side-effects of the floodgate-opening 1965 Immigration Act has been to prove what the architects of the 1921-24 cut-off already knew: national origins matter.

What this means is that Anti-America is attacking all the symbols of the Historic American Nation as evil because they are Historically American.

First they came forin the classic formulation—all the symbols of specifically Southern Heritage, flags, statues, cemeteries, street names, college names, the names of U.S. Army forts, everything like that.

At the same time, Anti-Americans were also attacking George Washington (white Southerner, slaveowner) Jefferson (ditto, plus the lie about Sally Hemings) and, in the frenzy after the death of George Floyd, even Abraham Lincoln’s statues were being overturned and burned.

Blacks have long considered themselves a separate anti-Nation—“Lift Every Voice And Sing,” the so-called Black National Anthem, has been around so long, its original nickname was the “Negro National Anthem.” It’s actually a Christian hymn, and as such would be banned from public performance at schools, commencement ceremonies, and football games—if the Christophobic laws against hymns, prayers, or Christmas carols were enforced against blacks.

Blacks have also now got their own Black Independence Day—“Juneteenth,” now as prominent a national holiday as Martin Luther King’s Birthday is and as George Washington’s Birthday…isn’t. (We’re supposed to call it “Presidents Day.”)

Now there’s a lot of hate for the Fourth of July, simply because it does represent America.

Earlier: THE FULFORD FILE: The Garland Raids Vs. The Palmer Raids—Now The Communists Are In Control

The temper of immigration patriots like myself and my colleagues at VDARE.com was not improved by the news that Comrade Merrick Garland’s Department of Justice has been ridding itself of immigration judges (not actually judges, of course, see here) who are insufficiently accommodating to illegal aliens. Judges appointed by the Trump Administration have of course been the principal targets.

The Washington Times broke this news last week, telling us that at least six judges have been fired, or let go on thin and implausible pretexts [DOJ engaged in ‘court packing on steroids‘ with immigration judges, by Stephen Dinan, June 20, 2022].

It‘s not just judges, either. These immigration courts are supervised by the Executive Office of Immigration Review, an agency within the Justice Department run by career administrators; and four of this agency's top officials have been dismissed.

One of that four was the agency‘s actual Director; and this was the first time in the agency's history that a Director has been removed involuntarily.

One of the judges now out of a job, name of Matthew O‘Brien, who‘d presided over an immigration court in Arlington, Virginia, told the tale on Laura Ingraham's show last week:

The immigration courts are supposed to give people who are seeking to remain in the United States or have violated the immigration law a fair review of any claims they have made. The Biden administration is trying to turn the immigration court into, essentially, a free candy store,

The blessings of insignificance    In my June 17th Radio Derb I indulged in one of my periodic gushes about Uruguay.

A few days before that I had heard from a friend in England who was himself gushing, but about a different country. He and his girlfriend had taken a vacation in Portugal and were now seriously thinking of moving there permanently, away from the expense, crowding, class and ethnic rancor of the U.K.

(Somewhat later in June I spotted a gushy tweet about Lisbon from a tweeter unknown to me: "such a gorgeous city!" I was in Lisbon myself very briefly in 2007—stopover on a cruise—and yes, for whatever such a short acquaintance is worth, it seemed like a very civilized and hospitable place with many elegant old buildings and cheerful, well-mannered inhabitants.)

Catching up later in the month I read Ed West's fine piece on Denmark. Talk about gushing! Ed makes you want to run out and buy plane tickets for wonderful, wonderful Copenhagen. He notes, however, that:

There is a sting in the tail for the country's many English-speaking admirers. Denmark's happiness, relative equality and sense of cohesion will never be imitated by Britain, let alone the United States. Denmark is like it is because it's full of Danes—and they're quite keen on keeping it that way.

The trade-off between diversity and solidarity is a long-established finding of social science, a fact of human behaviour visible in almost any setting. Yet it's a dilemma that politicians and social commentators across the western world hope can be overcome through good will and education, despite all evidence to the contrary.  [On Danish Exceptionalism, by Ed West; Substack, June 8, 2022]

I closed out June reading Rod Dreher's American Conservative June 27th and 29th double-header about Hungary; more precisely about Andrew Marantz's ignorant and dishonest New Yorker story about that country.

Hmmm… Uruguay, Portugal, Denmark, Hungary. What do they have in common? Well, they're all small without being pointlessly small like Tonga or Brunei: in thousands of square miles 68, 37, 17, 36. (Florida to West Virginia, very roughly.) They are modestly well populated: in millions 3.4, 10.2, 5.9, 9.7. Population density is middling: in persons per square mile 51, 298, 346, 270. (Colorado to Florida.) Prosperity is likewise middling: per capita GDP in thousands of dollars 22, 32, 56, 31 (U.K. 42).

And they are all inconsequential, hardly ever in the news. These are countries blessed with unimportance, with insignificance.

Most to the point, as Ed West noted in respect of Denmark, they are all ethnically homogenous.

There are of course downsides to a nation being small and unimportant. Big aggressive neighbors can

“American patriots have rights,” I said when introducing our Legal Defense Fund in early 2019. “They simply have not been organized to enforce them.”  But, quite frankly, the following three years of bitter struggle have caused me to question my optimism—and to wonder if the current communist coup has already ended Equal Justice in America. So I’m happy to announce one small but significant legal victory. It’s especially important because it took place in VDARE.com’s new home of Berkeley Springs, WV, where we are now headquartered in the Berkeley Springs Castle.

On August 21, 2000, at the height of the Black Lives Matter moral panic, some local Leftists held a BLM protest in Berkeley Springs. Perhaps unique in the country (but this is West Virginia), there was a massive counterprotest. The Leftists were totally swamped and humiliated. We posted two accounts with video, here and here.

This especially annoyed a local Leftist called Ted Stein, who had already emerged as a Twitter troll on my personal and VDARE.com’s Twitter accounts. (Stein’s Twitter handle is @tedstein. He’s got us blocked now, presumably for the reasons discussed below.)

Stein accused us of having “organized this violent counter protest to locals having a BLM vigil in the park. Biker gang. A militia. And hundreds of armed racists.”

In August 2020, the Brimelow family had not yet even moved to Berkeley Springs. (Although I came down from Connecticut to be present at the Castle, where at that time the late Martin Rojas [below right, with Brimelow daughter] was our castellan. I remember working in my tower office and hearing a chant erupt in the valley below: “USA! USA! USA!” I thought: “That’s not a typical BLM chant.”)

We knew absolutely nothing about the Mountaineer Warrior Alliance, the local motorcycle club that reportedly organized the counterprotest, although they certainly sound like fine people. And, of course, we had nothing to do with the counterprotest.

VDARE.com Editor Peter Brimelow writes: When I learned that Martin was working on this article, I begged him to let VDARE.com publish it, but he very honorably felt obligated by his agreement with Kevin MacDonald (whose tribute to Martin is here) and it was posted on Occidental Observer (where you can leave comments) on September 15, 2021. We reproduce it here by kind permission. Originally attributed to “Christopher Martin,” we have here substituted his real name, as far as I know the only time it has occurred as a byline, because of the freedom granted him by death after it was denied him in life by the country he loved. For the pseudonyms that America's ongoing communist coup forced him to use, see note at the end of this article.

Introduction

For years, I’ve wanted to go to southern West Virginia and do original reporting on what’s alternatively called “the white death” and “the opioid crisis.” It is the greatest social malady of our time, and people who read this publication should care about its resolution more than anyone else. After more than a year of false starts, I secured private funding to go there, specifically, to McDowell County, the nation’s poorest and least healthy county, just east of Kentucky and abutting Virginia to the south in what used to be “coal country.” By way of disclaimer, I told everyone the truth: That this project was taken on as a freelance project and I wasn’t sure where it would be published. I did not advertise my more controversial views. For the sake of everyone’s privacy, each person I spoke to is described and quoted anonymously.

Finally, this essay is not the end result of a research project. I leave the task of documenting the sociological and economic origins of this crisis to historians and authors capable of obtaining grants and book deals. What I set out to do here was speak to actual residents of the area. I wanted to know what they had to say about it all and what they had seen over the course of their lives.

Photo of downtown Welch in 2004 when its population was around 2500

My drive into Welch (pop. 2406 in the 2010 census, estimated to be 1904 in 2019), McDowell County’s seat, is a long one, and what’s most striking is that the last two hours of it are nothing but turns on windy country roads surrounded by mountains covered in the lushest forests I’ve ever seen. I’d read a lot about this place, but nobody ever mentioned its natural beauty—or what a hassle it is to get to.

I arrive late on a Saturday and figure my best starting point is the bar I can walk to from where I’m staying. It’s small and largely unadorned. There’s a separate room full of slot machines, and everyone’s in there except me and
