Hillary Clinton emails: FBI release shows candidate said she could not remember briefings because of head injury

Rob Crilly New York

Hillary Clinton told federal investigators that she could not remember some of the briefings she was given on handling classified material because of a concussion she suffered in 2012, according to documents made public by the FBI. …

“However, in December of 2012, Clinton suffered a concussion and then around the New Year had a blood clot. Based on her doctor’s advice, she could only work at State for a few hours a day and could not recall every briefing she received,” the report said.

My impression is that as you get older, you have a harder time coming back from traumas. There can be a stairstep effect to the aging process. You can be trudging along, only slowing down gradually, but then you get sick or injured and suddenly, even after you recover from the particular insult, you seem a lot older overall.

My mother would say, and family pictures support this, that she had been middle-aged up until she got cancer in her early sixties, but when she was finally over it a couple of years later, she was old.

Similarly, I don’t know if Reagan ever really recovered from getting shot in early 1981.

Hillary looked in good health during the 2008 primaries and during her term as Secretary of State. Then she had a big health problem at the end of 2012. From ABC News in 2014:

Hillary Clinton Took 6 Months to ‘Get Over’ Concussion, Bill Says of Timeline May 14, 2014 By MARY BRUCE

Bill Clinton did more today than defend his wife, Hillary Clinton, from recent accusations leveled by GOP strategist Karl Rove that she suffered brain damage after falling in December 2012.

The former president revealed that his wife’s injury “required six months of very serious work to get over,” he said during a question-and-answer session at the Peterson Foundation in Washington.

“They went to all this trouble to say she had staged what was a terrible concussion that required six months of very serious work to get over,” he said. “It’s something she never low-balled with the American people, never tried to pretend it didn’t happen.”

But Bill Clinton’s timeline appears to differ from official comments from the State Department at the time.

“Judging by the woman we saw this morning and the workload that she’s got she seems to be fully recovered,” spokeswoman Victoria Nuland told reporters at a State Department briefing Jan. 7, 2013, about a month after Hillary Clinton’s fall and concussion occurred.

That same day, State Department officials presented the secretary of state with a football helmet as a welcome-back gift.

Hillary’s last day as Secretary of State was February 1, 2013, a little over a month after her fall and subsequent brain clot.

Now Hillary seems like she can get herself up periodically for a good performance, such as her convention acceptance speech and most of her debates against Bernie, but it’s a struggle.

I suspect if Hillary were to announce she’s dropping out for health reasons, and Tim Kaine moves up to the top of the ticket with Elizabeth Warren coming on board as VP, a lot of Democrats would breathe a sigh of relief. (Obama could secretly promise to issue a blanket pardon to Hillary and all the Clinton insiders on 1/19/17.)
