Today’s Rasmussen Poll reports no change in the Presidential race: Obama 48% Romney 46%.

Rasmussen subscribers can learn the racial breakdown:

Race:

White

Black

Other

Romney

56%

2%

33%

Obama

37%

95%

59%

No doubt the Romney campaign consultants will be having crisis luncheons catered by 5-star restaurants to bemoan the fact that Romney’s Black support halved overnight. His “Other” support rose by a point.

But the all-important White share was static.

Gallup also updated: Obama 49% Romney 44%. Since James Fulford reported on Friday Obama is down a point but Romney shows no change. Gallup does not publish its racial breakdown.

Looking at the Rasmussen web page I was treated to a targeted Ad from the Democratic National Committee telling me the Republican candidate in my district wants to abolish Medicare.

This reminds me of a parallel situation. What Romney desperately needs now is the sort intervention which rescued Ronald Reagan’s Presidential campaign in 1976 after his advisors had got him defeated in the Florida primary by running him into the Social Security mine field.

Then the recue was provided by the North Carolinians Jesse Helms and Tom Ellis, who also won Helms 5 straight Senate races in a row starting in 1972 when getting white Southerners to vote Republican was very difficult

But as I said in Jesse Helms: The Sailer Strategy Victorious Helms

…recognized that the interests of black and whites do not always coincide, and that whites wanted representation. He was prepared to give it to them.

Of course Romney’s key funders would not tolerate that.
