No Amnesty

H/T One Old Vet

Travel yesterday prevented my posting on time about One Old Vet’s Friday Amnesty story compendium which totaled 18.

An unusually high proportion of the posts were congenial, notably the link to the fine CIS paper Emotional Pleas Overshadow Rational Arguments at Senate Hearing.

But perhaps the most important link was to Texas' GOP not buying amnesty By Jeremy Roebuck Mysanantonio.com Thursday February 14, 2013

The nation's growing Hispanic voter base may be driving the immigration debate in Washington. But in GOP-held Texas congressional districts, it hardly has made a mark...

Of the state's 11 Republican-held congressional districts with Hispanic populations of at least 25 percent, seven are represented by lawmakers who already have ruled out supporting any amnesty plan...

For many lawmakers, the debate comes down to whose votes they need the most and who actually comes to the polls, said Cal Jillson, a political scientist at Southern Methodist University in Dallas.

And though their Hispanic constituencies may be growing… that remains, at least for now, primarily conservative Anglo voters. Hispanic voter turnout in Texas has historically hovered around 20 percent.

“They know that they have time before the Hispanic vote becomes a threat to their status,” Jillson said. “The question is: What do they do with that time?”

Wealthy donors debate Republican 'rebrand'...

Adelson and Wynn in talks to combine forces...

which linked to a Financial Times story Wealthy donors debate Republican ‘rebrand’ By Stephanie Kirchgaessner February 15, 2013

Advisers to Sheldon Adelson and Steve Wynn, the Las Vegas casino billionaires who were once known for their bitter rivalry, are in talks to work together on an effort to “rebrand” the Republican party in the US after the 2012 election loss.

Buried in this we find the author (no doubt correctly) finds it relevant to remark

More big money donors are calling for Republicans to shift the party’s stance on immigration to appeal to more Latino voters and soften their rhetoric on social issues like abortion.

Also

Mr Wynn claimed to have supported Mr Obama in 2008 but was aggressively courted by Mr Rove after he came to dislike the Democratic president. Mr Wynn has reportedly donated to American Crossroads

What an entrepreneur Karl Rove is!

Steve Wynn of course, has a similar background to Sheldon Adelson.
