Re: A Dallas Reader Tries To Educate A Liberal Columnist

From: Gerald Martin (e-mail him)

You know, I just woke up with one of those "things you wish you'd put in your letter" bouncing around inside my head. It's about this Texas demographer quote that liberal columnist Bud Kennedy [Email him] (and everyone else in the world) likes to cite: "It's basically over for Anglos in Texas." To which I should have replied: "The last person who said, "It's basically over for Anglos in Texas," was Santa Anna, as he lay down for his siesta about an hour before the Battle of San Jacinto."

I might have added that in 1836, 25,000 Anglo colonists— who had no real army— somehow won their independence from Mexico, a nation of 7,000,000 people which had a battle-tested professional military including European officers.

So maybe Anglos in Texas aren't quite done yet.

Oh, the good stuff you think of when you're a-bed.
