Re: A Dallas Reader Tries To Educate A Liberal Columnist

From: Gerald Martin (e-mail him)

You know, I just woke up with one of those "things you wish you`d put in your letter" bouncing around inside my head. It`s about this Texas demographer quote that liberal columnist Bud Kennedy [Email him] (and everyone else in the world) likes to cite: "It`s basically over for Anglos in Texas." To which I should have replied: "The last person who said, "It`s basically over for Anglos in Texas," was Santa Anna, as he lay down for his siesta about an hour before the Battle of San Jacinto."

I might have added that in 1836, 25,000 Anglo colonists— who had no real army— somehow won their independence from Mexico, a nation of 7,000,000 people which had a battle-tested professional military including European officers.

So maybe Anglos in Texas aren`t quite done yet.

Oh, the good stuff you think of when you`re a-bed.
