As I’ve long been pointing out, one of the most worrisome problems of this century is sub-Saharan African population growth. UN forecasts are staggering. The good news is that it’s likely not an insoluble problem, but only if the Great and the Good get to work on it soon. My impression has long been that Bill Gates is, deep down, the Protestant guy appalled by Irish Catholic fecundity in Monty Pyth...

Back in early January 2018, I counted up the 2017 homicides totals in the 50 biggest cities from local newspaper end-of-year stories, and found that murders appeared to be down 2 percent versus 2016. That wasn’t much, but at least it was better than the 22% increase nationally from 2014 to 2016. Now the FBI has released its official count for 2017 for the whole country (not just the biggest cities...

Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh is facing yet another thinly-sourced and obviously problematic accusation of sexual misconduct as his confirmation draws near. But it’s painfully obvious that for many of Kavanaugh’s critics, the DC Circuit Court judge is guilty simply because he embodies the preppy WASP archetype. As leftist New York Times columnist Paul Krugman [Email him]put it on Twitter, “Whatever eventually happens, Kavanaugh was clearly a smarmy, smirking, entitled and mercenary guy; the odds that he had some kind of skeleton in his closet were pretty good.”

The accusations against Kavanaugh are razor thin and poorly-remembered by his accusers. But journalists/ Leftist Enforcers wishing to smear the nominee as a rapist merely turn to his background in order to accomplish their objective. According to the movies and popular culture, Kavanaugh’s milieus make him guilty enough.

Thus he was a popular jock at an elite prep school who helped run the “Keg City Club.” At Yale, he was a member of the exclusvie (and much-criticized) Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity—the same fraternity to which George W. Bush (and four other Presidents) belonged. Both of these are considered “problematic” by the chattering class and popular culture. They’re too white, too privileged, too macho, too conservative, too bigoted, and just too damn exclusive. Thursday is shaping up to be the Trump presidency's "Gunfight at O.K. Corral." That day, the fates of Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh and Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, and much else, may be decided. The New York Times report that Rosenstein, sarcastically or seriously in May 2017, talked of wearing a wire into the Oval Office to entrap the president, suggests that his survival into ...

Good on Tucker Carlson for keeping up his investigation of Big Tech’s manipulation of what appears on people’s computer screens with the aim of affecting American elections and electing liberals like Hillary Clinton. In a September 20 segment, Carlson examined the Google response to President Trump’s so-called “Muslim ban” (a temporary measure which was quite popular among GOP voters according to ...

The WEF has a prediction that should get people’s attention because of the rapid entry of smart machines into the workplace. Six days ago, I half-joked that in their newest campaign to undo the 2016 election, by making it impossible for President Trump to seat another Supreme Court justice of his liking, Democrats were holding auditions for new sex hoaxers. There's been a spate of articles in recent days complaining that the Trump Administration is moving to prevent welfare recipients from obtaining green cards. A recent poll finds black Democrat Andrew Gillum is building a comfortable lead over white Republican Ron DeSantis in the Florida governor’s race. [New poll shows Gillum leading DeSantis by 6 points, by Tim Swift, Local 10, September 19, 2018] As Conservatism Inc. never ceases to remind its dwindling constituency, Gillum is, like other Democrats this election cycle, essentially a socialist, and DeSantis is a “Reagan conservative”.  [For a Florida Governor, It’s a Reagan Conservative vs. a Sanders Socialist, by Neal Freeman, National Review, September 5, 2018] But it’s not 1980 anymore and Gillum’s campaigning for what Governing’s Graham Vyse correctly calls “key Democratic Socialist priorities” isn’t scaring away voters. [How Democratic Socialists Performed in State and Local Primaries, September 20, 2018] The truth is that politics has changed, campaigns are now about identity and demographics, and DeSantis, like the Stupid Party generally, has no idea how to handle it.

Thus DeSantis is currently plagued with yet another case of what the System Main Stream Media terms a “racial controversy.” A supporter, Steven M. Alembik, tweeted “F--- THE MUSLIM N-----” after a typically sanctimonious Barack Obama speech, leading the DeSantis campaign immediately to perform a full grovel. This was particularly stupid because Alembik is Jewish (“I grew up in New York in the ’50s. We were the kikes. They were the n------. They were the goyim. And those were the spics”.) and an adroit defense of him, for example attributing his hostility to Islam to his obviously passionate concern for Israel, would have helped DeSantis with a powerful Florida constituency. Between 1968 and 1973, a fascinating experiment took place at the University of Maryland. Led by the startlingly creative scientist John B. Calhoun (1917-1995). Tts aim was to understand what would happen if Darwinian selection massively weakened. [Death Squared: The explosive growth and demise of a mouse population, by John B. Calhoun, Proceedings of the Royal Society of Medicine, 1973]  In creating this “Mouse Utopia” (pictured right) the experiment replicated post-industrial conditions in the West, where child mortality has fallen from 40% to about 1% since 1800, due to dramatically improved medicine and living conditions. The results were horrifying: increasingly bizarre behaviour patterns, a collapse in reproduction, eventual extinction. Are we in our own “Mouse Utopia” in which Darwinian selection has collapsed? The latest piece of evidence for this: we are becoming more left-handed.

A surprising number of recent US presidents have been southpaws. Obama, George W. Bush, Reagan, Carter and Ford would all have probably smudged their writing when they were at school. However, we are not evolved to be left-handed to any significant degree.

According to New Zealand psychologist Michael Corballis, the human propensity to be right-handed is caused by our heightened ability to communicate. The left hemisphere controls vocalization in most species. As our ancestors learned to walk upright, they started using their hands to communicate as well as their voices. They used their right hand, because this is controlled by the left hemisphere. Increased use of the right hand meant that we started employing the right hand for pretty much everything. [From mouth to hand: Gesture, speech, and the evolution of right-handedness, By Michael Corballis, Behavioral and Brain Sciences, April, 2003]

So, the “norm” is to be left-hemisphere-dominant for language. According to Corballis, if somebody is left-handed, this means that they are right-hemisphere dominant for language. This can only happen if they have an asymmetrical brain structure, which uses the right-side more than it should. We are evolved to be symmetrical—that’s why the essence of beauty is symmetry—so it follows that left-handed people have more mutant genes, causing asymmetry directly; or a poor immune system, meaning they are not strong enough to maintain a symmetrical phenotype in the face of disease.

Unsurprisingly, therefore, being left-handed is associated with numerous markers of “developmental instability”—that something has gone wrong; a situation generally reflective of “mutational load.” Left-handed people display elevated levels of depression, autism, slightly lower IQ (an average difference of about one point), outlier high IQ (which often happens due to mutation as it is associated with poor mental and physical heath) or outlier low IQ, psychopathic personality, homosexuality, pedophilia, transsexuality, and of numerous physical conditions, such as allergies. Unsurprisingly, southpaws thus end up with low a lower average socioeconomic status. [Review and theory of handedness, birth order, and homosexuality in men, By Ray Blanchard, Laterality, 2008]

Theecon

The fuss over Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh having allegedly copped a feel from a high-school girl 35 or 36 years ago blew up just after last week's Radio Derb went to tape. My own first reaction, when I first heard the accuser's account of what happened, was: "They're making a fuss about that?" But over and above the particular issue of Brett Kavanaugh's nomination, there is a meta-issue. Why are Supreme Court nominations now such central events in our country's political life?

About my first reaction: We really have bred up a generation of snowflakes; and snowflakery is such an appealing approach to life for some elements of previous generations—in this case, the generation of Kavanaugh and his accuser, which I think classifies as late-Boomer or early-Gen-X—trembling, fearful snowflakery is so appealing to some of these folk, they've retconned their own lives to incorporate it.

I can certainly testify that for my generation, the earliest Boomers, the encounter as alleged would not have moved the needle on anybody's outrage dial. For one thing, a 15-year-old girl attending a house party with no adults present and booze flowing, would have been assumed to be a bit sluttish, so that the normal reserve and respect we accorded to all females would have been diminished somewhat. No, not abandoned, but diminished.

For another thing, I definitely—actually, quite vividly—recall that in my own teen years, my female coevals had sharp little fists that could give you a nasty black eye if you got out of line. Presumably teenage girls suffered some collective atrophy of the muscles in the twenty years between my house-partying and Brett Kavanaugh's, leaving them defenseless against giggling drunk 17-year-old males trying to grope them.
